At Nextgen Biologics, we are dedicated to advancing the future of regenerative medicine through science inspired by nature. Our work centers around the unique regenerative abilities of the axolotl, a species known for its extraordinary capacity to heal and restore tissue. By harnessing the properties of the axolotl’s extracellular matrix (ECM), we develop innovative solutions that support tissue repair, wound healing, and improved patient outcomes. As a mission-driven company, we are committed to creating accessible, effective, and biologically advanced products that meet the evolving needs of clinicians and the patients they serve.

How NeXtGen™ was founded
NeXtGen™ Biologics was born from a shared vision between two leaders from different generations—Jamie Grooms and Jonelle Toothman—united by a common passion: transforming healthcare through innovative regenerative medicine.
Jamie Grooms brings over 30 years of experience in biology and medical technology, having played key roles in launching successful medical device companies such as RTI Surgical and AxoGen. His deep expertise in extracellular matrix (ECM) science and patient-centered innovation laid the groundwork for NeXtGen’s pioneering approach to healing, focused on harnessing the natural properties of ECM to improve patient outcomes.
Jonelle Toothman’s journey into healthcare leadership was shaped by personal experience and professional growth. With a background in journalism and healthcare at Pfizer, she combined her skills in communications, marketing, and medical device knowledge with a drive to lead impactful change. When introduced to Jamie and the unique ECM technology he had patented, she quickly recognized its potential and embraced the opportunity to lead.
Together, Jamie and Jonelle founded NeXtGen™ Biologics in 2014, blending mentorship and collaboration to build a company focused on developing breakthrough biologic products. Under Jonelle’s leadership as CEO, NeXtGen™ has advanced from concept to commercialization, raising over $13 million in startup capital and assembling a world-class team committed to redefining patient care.
Guided by a culture of trust, innovation, and perseverance, NeXtGen™ Biologics continues to push the boundaries of regenerative medicine with the hope of one day enabling patients—especially children recovering from trauma—to heal naturally and fully, without lasting scars.
